Stolen

I’m a pretty sentimental person. I enjoy hearing stories about what my grandparents were like when they were younger and I enjoy having things that belonged to them. When someone compliments me on a picture, or a knick-knack, I love telling the story behind the item. When my Grandma passed away three years ago, I was able to have many of her things – furniture, jewelry, books, knick-knacks – and they’re all scattered throughout my house. I think she’d love to know that my wedding China sits in her China Hutch, that her brooches helped to make my wedding bouquet, that I’ve cooked a meal using her James Beard cookbook or that a photo of my Grandpa as a little boy hangs in my hallway.

Recently, my aunt asked if I’d like to have my Grandma’s beaver coat and mink stole. Of course, I said yes. I wasn’t sure what I’d do with them, but I thought they’d be fun to have. A Portland girl rarely has the occasion to wear a fur coat (because she’s scared that angry hipsters will spray-paint her) but you never know. A couple weeks ago, she called to confirm my address and shipped them off to me. I didn’t think about them again until early Thursday morning, when I received an email asking if I was having fun with the furs.

But, I’m not. Because they were placed on my doorstop on Monday (along with a box from Amazon) and they were snatched off my porch. It makes me sick to think that someone thought it was okay to enter my yard, climb up my porch steps and take something that didn’t belong to them. And, it makes me sick to know that someone else took something so important, so sentimental. I filed a police report, but I honestly believe that the furs are either sitting in a pawn shop or a dumpster somewhere. I’m sure I’ll never see them again.

And, maybe it’s silly, but I feel unsafe in my home now. But someone of questionable character came into my yard. They probably looked in my windows. They might come back. I live in a nice neighborhood with a really low crime rate, we bought this house because the crime rate was so low. And, now I’m scared to live here.

What is wrong with people?

That is really, truly awful. I’m so sorry that happened to you. :( It’s so violating.

Ugh. That is horrible. I’m fortunate to live in a building where I have package pickup, but I would otherwise recommend having packages delivered to your office. Yes, everyone will know about your online shopping habit, but at least you’ll have your stuff.

Oh no, that’s awful! We were the victims of a break-in once, and the only things stolen were our DVD player…and a bunch of costume jewelry that had belonged to my late grandmother. I’m so sorry this happened to you. Worst of all is that this criminal made you feel unsafe. :-(

I’m just so, so sorry this happened to you. Such a crappy thing for someone to do – especially with such a priceless package. I’m still hoping that it will turn up….perhaps naive, but my fingers are still crossed. :(

I’m so sorry that happened to you! What a terrible thing to lose- both a sense of security AND your grandma’s beautiful things :-(
Oddly enough, the only people I know who have been burgled in Portland live in the general area of your ‘hood (well, and some car break-ins downtown & Hawthorne). I think it has to do with higher pedestrian traffic unfortunately… Anyway, it is really awful and violating and I’m so sorry it happened.

I say oddly enough because I live in an area that most people would expect to see more crime- there have been two shootings (one a murder) within 10 blocks of our house in the last six-ish months…

I’m SO sorry, babe. When you first tweeted about this I had no idea they were coats that belonged to your grandmother. UGH.

I don’t understand stealing (in general, but especially) packages off people’s porches.

                    Hugs.

Have you checked pawn stores? It might suck going into them given the situation but you might find them there.

Why did the courier company leave them on your doorstep? They are not supposed to do that for precisely this reason. Aren’t you supposed to sign for the delivery and if nobody is home, they leave a notice on your door saying there’s a package for you and where you can go to pick it up? I am horrified they’d leave a valuable package sitting unattended. Can’t you take it up with them for reimbursement?
