Wedding Miscellany

I logged into TheKnot.com this morning because I like to feel inadequate and stressed out. It told me that I have 161 to-dos and 205 days until my wedding. How many to-dos have I completed? ONLY TWENTY-EIGHT.

So…here’s what’s going on:

Engagement Photos: DONE and DONE! We had so much fun running around Portland on a beautiful day with our fab photographers Ashley and Aaron. I couldn’t be more thrilled with how they turned out.

Dress: You may recall that I am a terrible daughter and instead of allowing my mother to go wedding dress shopping with me, I instead went dress shopping with my dearest Kristin in Chicago. We found THE dress, and I bought said dress. Well, my mother came over a couple Sundays ago and I tried the dress on for her. Guess what? It is GIGANTIC on me. I emailed “Ashley” and luckily, they are sending me out a smaller size. Thank goodness. Also: my return email was from Paula, thus proving once again that THERE IS NO ASHLEY.

Floral/Decor: Seriously? My least favorite part of this whole affair. I’d like to tell someone to make it look pretty and be done with it. But, apparently that is not how it works. (This is also proof that I’m missing the Bride Gene). BUT, I did find these lanterns and I think we’ll use them for table decorations. And, for flowers, I have an appointment next week with a flower lady. Or whatever you call them.

DJ: FACT. All Portland Disc Jockeys have terrible punctuation and grammar skills. I seriously cringe at the emails they send me. I’ve picked the least offensive email out of the bunch and I think we have a winner. Really, they have very little to do, as I’ve already picked out close to 100 songs that I’d like to have played. (I JUST KNOW HOW I WANT THINGS, OKAY?)

Cake: A former colleague told me that for her 40th birthday, she had a giant sheet cake made of chunks of cheese. Can’t we do that? I didn’t think so. Several cake tastings are scheduled. I think we’re going for cupcakes as really, neither one of us cares for regular cake all that much. We’ll do a small cutting cake, so I have something to put our adorable cake topper* on top of.

Registry: We’re registering this Sunday. Bill can’t stop talking about the scan gun. I’ve been obsessively looking the best cookware and knives up on CooksIllustrated.com.

Save the Dates and Invitations: This is my major cause of stress these days. I know just how I want them to look, but I’m having trouble putting it into words. We’re spending Friday evening working on this. Bill is about to learn about the wonder that is letterpress. Lucky him.

I think that’s it, for now. See, I’m not THAT far behind.

*Not purchased yet, but I know that it will be darling. I have faith.

So! Much! Fun! Sounds like you guys are well on your way. Registering with the gun will be a blast. I loooooved my All-Clad cookware. Sadly I did not get in the divorce so I cook in Gmom’s Depression Era pots. I shall live vicariously through you. ;-)

I think you’re doing a fabulous job, Rhi! Don’t over-stress it – the day (and you) is going to be absolutely stunning!

As an aside, the DJs’ lack of grammatical skills would also make me cringe.

We had a little cake for us to cut as a couple and then we had cupcakes for everyone else. They were a huge hit!

I think you’re doing fine – you have a ton of time and so many people (myself included) get caught up in the experience and forget to have fun – so have fun (especially with the scanner gun!). Those lanterns are gorgeous!

Cupcakes are a great idea! You could have assorted flavors. You are doing great and your wedding will be beautiful.

If you need another flower person to meet with I can highly recommend: http://www.starflowerpassion.com/
Two of my favorite Portlanders hired her for their weddings and had rave reviews!

Our only fight during the entire wedding process was over font for the STDs. Stupid, arms crossed, the lady helping us thinking we’re going to attack each other, fight. So. Yeah. Good luck with that!

I still can’t believe you didn’t use the bigger dress as an excuse to eat lots and lots of donuts! :)

Also, you’re clearly missing out on a huge opportunity to have DJ Pauly D at your wedding. You need to get on it!

I remember the “too much to do in too little time” feeling, but it will all come together! And it looks like you are working on a lot which could be crossed off that darn Knot list very soon! Love your center piece idea!

Did I mention eating before you do your registry? Like Burgerville. Eat Burgerville. Something soothing and grounding and solid.

PROMISE ME YOU’LL EAT!!!

You’ve gotten so much done! And yes you can too tell someone “make it pretty” and back away…you just have to find the RIGHT person. :-)

Good luck with the rest!

You’re doing fine. We were still figuring out what to serve at our reception the night before our wedding (which is what happens when your fiance says “this is too stressful for you, I’M going to plan the reception” and you say “okay”)

I have to do the assvice thing about the cake thing though: whether you do cakes or cupcakes, Beaverton Bakery is the shiznit. Plus, if you do a regular cake through them they’ll make you a small replica of your cake on your first anniversary for something like $20-$30 so you don’t have to do the whole saving the top tier thing (which we still ended up doing because my Grandmother didn’t believe me. We’re eating the tier for Valentine’s Day).

Honestly though the cake tastings were my favorite because, seriously? free cake!

You are doing AWESOME, and you still have so! much time. Also: I miss! you.

best “save the date” card we got? A FRIDGE magnet. How awesome is that!? We still have it up there.

SO cool.

Dude, you have a lot done! That’s really awesome.

If you’re going for cupcakes, may I suggest Bakery Bar in PDX?

They have the BEST cakes in Portland, and one of their “cakes for two” would be PERFECT for a cake that the bride and groom cut.

Jocelyn(the owner) is super nice and from a chef’s point of view, it’s one of only 2 places I’d go to if I couldn’t get a friend to do it.

If it makes you feel better – the DJs in Sacramento have awful grammar too. I want to go through and edit their flyers and send ‘em back. ugh!
